Food Safety Verification Process

Food safety verification is an independent check to confirm that a food business is following good food safety practices, keeping required records and managing food safety risks in day-to-day operations. The focus is not only on how a kitchen or site looks — it's on whether the business is doing the important things needed to keep food safe and suitable.

Send Your Registration Details

Provide your registration details or certificate so we can confirm the scope of your business and the type of plan or programme you operate under.

Confirm the Verification Scope

We confirm what type of verification is required โ€” Template FCP, Custom FCP, My Food Plan, NP1/2/3, or other recognised verification services.

Schedule the Verification

An appointment is scheduled based on business availability, verifier availability, and any required timeframe. May be onsite, remote, or a combination.

Pre-Verification Preparation

Prepare relevant records and evidence: food safety records, temperature records, cleaning records, supplier records, traceability records, training records and previous verification reports.

Verification Visit or Assessment

The verifier checks food handling practices, hygiene, cleaning, temperature control, storage, allergen management, traceability, corrective actions and compliance with the registered plan or programme.

Verification Outcome and Report

A report is issued summarising the outcome, evidence reviewed, good practices observed, any non-conformances, and required corrective actions with timeframes.

Corrective Actions and Close-Out

If corrective actions are raised, address them within the required timeframe with evidence such as updated procedures, completed records, or staff training evidence.

Certificate or Confirmation After Verification

Once verification is complete and any required corrective actions are addressed, a verification outcome or confirmation is provided according to the reporting process.

Ongoing Verification Frequency

How often your business is verified depends on the type of plan or programme and how well your business manages food safety โ€” see the frequency table below.

Changes to Your Business

If your business changes โ€” new processes, products, ownership, site, equipment or scope โ€” contact MPI or your verifier to confirm what needs to be updated.

Indicative Verification Frequency

Businesses that demonstrate good food safety management may have less frequent verification. Businesses with significant or repeated issues may need more frequent verification until acceptable outcomes are achieved.

Plan / Programme Type Indicative Frequency (Well-Managed)
Template Food Control PlanUp to 18 months
Custom Food Control Plan / My Food PlanUp to 18 months
National Programme 3Up to 2 years
National Programme 2Up to 3 years
National Programme 1May not require ongoing verification

Verification frequency can be affected by audit outcome, business risk, compliance history, corrective actions and how effectively the business manages food safety.
