Build a practical understanding of the responsibilities of a registered New Zealand food importer. Follow original fictional cases involving shelf-stable, chilled and frozen foods from product classification and supplier evidence through clearance, safe handling, release decisions, traceability and recall readiness.
Learn how registered importer responsibilities fit alongside Customs and biosecurity requirements. Check the exact product, country of origin and processing conditions rather than assuming one permit, test, temperature or certificate applies to every food. Practise documented pre-arrival assessment and confirmation of safety and suitability, followed by a separate confirmation before sale. Explore labelling and allergens, cold-chain decisions, nonconforming shipments and honest communications.
The 14 detailed lessons contain colourful interactive slides, illustrated walkthroughs, 28 decision activities with explanations of each choice, substantial case studies and a marked knowledge check in every lesson. Allow approximately 3โ4 hours for reading, practical activities, lesson checks and the final exam. Your individual student account saves progress so you can return and continue.
The course distinguishes current compliance duties from suggested business practices and preparation for changes. The 2026 Food Notice was issued on 1 May 2026 and takes effect on 1 February 2027; it is not presented as already in force in October 2026. Always check the current official requirements that apply when your shipment is imported.
Complete all lesson checks before attempting the 40-question final exam. At least 32 correct answers (80%) are required to pass. Successful learners receive an Access Food course-completion certificate through the existing student and certificate system. The certificate records course completion; it does not certify a business or replace importer registration or product-specific advice.
The fee is NZ$70 plus GST: NZ$10.50 GST, NZ$80.50 total per learner. Paid enrolment uses the existing secure online checkout.

Assessment and completion
Complete and pass all 14 lesson knowledge checks, then complete the 40-question final exam. At least 32 correct answers (80%) are required to pass. Practice decisions provide feedback and can be retried; they do not count towards the final exam score. Existing assessment retry rules apply.
Access Food course-completion certificate after passing the assessment. This course is not MPI or NZQA accreditation, importer registration, certification of a business or product clearance. Completion does not guarantee regulatory compliance.
