Learn to review food labels against the actual product, ingredients, sales route and current New Zealand requirements. Follow fictional label lead Mere and production lead Sam at Kลwhai Foods through original sauce, bakery, cafรฉ, imported-snack and preserve cases. Compare specifications, artwork and physical packs, find evidence gaps and make defensible hold and release decisions.
Sixteen substantial interactive lessons cover responsibilities and information routes; mandatory pack information; food names, supplier details and lot identity; ingredients and percentages; exact allergen names and exemptions; Plain English Allergen Labelling (PEAL); supplier and recipe changes; warnings and precautionary wording; date marks and storage; nutrition information panels; claims; imports, wholesale and repacking; New Zealand origin and quantity checks; artwork control; errors and recalls; verifier conversations; and an integrated label-review case. Each lesson includes practical choices with feedback, a worked notebook exercise and a marked check.
The course distinguishes binding requirements from optional review tools, and explains why exemptions depend on the food and supply route. It uses current MPI guidance and the applicable Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code. Specialist foods, uncertain ingredient exemptions, claim substantiation and shelf-life decisions may need competent specialist or regulatory advice. Example label snippets are fictional learning evidence, not complete commercially approved labels.
Allow approximately 4โ6 hours including reading, activities and the final exam; individual pace varies. Pass all 16 lesson checks before the 40-question final exam. At least 32 correct answers (80%) are required to pass. The fee is NZ$50 plus NZ$7.50 GST: NZ$57.50 total per learner.
Successful completion earns an Access Food course-completion certificate. It does not approve a label, product, process or business, establish recognised verifier status or provide MPI, NZQA or ISO accreditation.

Assessment and completion
Pass all 16 marked lesson checks before the 40-question final exam. At least 32 correct answers (80%) are required to pass. Practical choices give feedback for every option and do not count towards the final score. Notebook work supports learning and does not replace workplace practical assessment or product-specific evidence.
Successful completion earns an Access Food course-completion certificate. This is not MPI, NZQA or ISO accreditation, label/product/business approval, a recognised verifier qualification or a guarantee of compliance or a verification pass.
